LOCATION & CITY CHARACTERISTICS
Jakarta is an Asian megacity and is the second most populous city in the world. It is the capital of Indonesia and has a population of just over 12 million. Jakarta is located on the northwest coast of Java and is the country's economic, culture and political center. In 2008 Jakarta was listed as a Global city, meaning it is a main contributor and the capital of the worlds economic system. In addition, its location as a port makes it an important center for trade.
Jakarta is made up of many different cultures and traditions, some have been there for many years and many brought in over time. The majority of people are either Malay or Polynesian, however Jakarta is also commonly a home to immigrants such as the Chinese, Arabic, Persian and a few others. Indonesia is home to over 500 languages. The official language of Jakarta is Bahasia, but Betawi, Sudanese and Javanese are commonly used as well.
Due to its population Jakarta is very overpopulated and crowded. This has an impact on housing, food, healthcare, infrastructure, transportation and job creation. With a rapidly fast growing population Jakarta has many problems that come hand in hand with overpopulation.
