PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
Overpopulation
Jakarta used to be an evenly spread city with many job opportunities, housing for everyone and food that could last a life time. However over the last 10 years many migrants have come in and made the population grow rapidly. In consequence public places such as parks, riverbanks and nice beaches have become slum housing for squatters, meanwhile sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and bridges are filled with migrants who try and earn money by starting up small street vendors. In addition the growing amount of people puts a strain on transport, hospitals, water supply and schools. Due to lack of tap water supply in infrastructure 60 percent of Jakarta's population use groundwater for bathing and in serious situations, drinking.
Solution
In 2014 Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto stated that overpopulation was a threat to the environment, and that education was the solution. He said "In order to stop overpopulation, we need to connect with our environment, we need to increase our economy and the amount of job opportunities, and to do this we need to push and develop our education." If Jakarta developed more knowledge on what their city was going through they would see that there is solutions, they may take a long time but they will work. If their education rate increased they would be able to develop more job opportunities. This would lead to more money being made and increase the amount of people having enough food, water and housing. If Jakarta acknowledged the topic of overpopulation a little more, they could find little things to make their land less populated without getting rid of anyone. For example they could clear parts of land that aren't being used and start a project or working bee on building apartments that homeless people could live in, leaving their streets less crowded than they need to be. Jakarta only needs to think outside the square for them to realise that there are many little things that can contribute to a big change in the end.
Pollution
Pollution is a problem that comes with the dilemma of overpopulation. Once there is more people, there are more vechiles used, meaning more fumes. There is more factories and buildings built, meaning more smoke. Due to overpopulation there are slums living on the riverbanks of Jakarta, these people throw their waste into the rivers living them black and murky. Not only are the slums sickening the rivers but the larger industrial polluters also are, this is leaving Jakarta Bay to become a toxic dump. As it is not healthy for the environment or animals it is also not healthy for the citizens to be breathing in air with such a large amount of carbon monoxide.
Solution
A solution to one type of pollution that is happening in Jakarta known as water pollution is to raise peoples awareness of what they are doing when they pollute these waters and what they are killing. Also a strict penalty can be put in place to penalise anyone who throws waste or pollutes the water in anyway. This would be a surprise to the city of Jakarta and would have a strong impact as people would not want to be wasting their money on paying fees instead of food.
Another type of pollution is land pollution, Jakarta has only 9.3% of green area out of their whole 663 kilometers squared of land. People of Jakarta have not been educated to throw their rubbish into a bin, but they throw it out their window or into the rivers. To prevent this they need to be taught to throw their rubbish into a bin, and in addition to this they must create an environmentally friendly way for their rubbish bins to be disposed of. Lastly they need to employ cleaners to clean and pick up rubbish that is left outside. This should not be such a bad job after they have been taught the right ways on how to handle their rubbish. Employing cleaners adds another job opportunity and is also cleaning their city.
