POPULATION CHARACTERISTICS
Jakarta is not only the most populous city in Indonesia but also the largest in the South East Asia, and it is the thirteenth largest city in the world straight after Shenzhen, China. Jakarta was established over 460 years ago and at the start it did not consist of much land, meaning there was not a very big population. However over the last four decades (40 years) it has expanded rapidly and the population has skyrocketed. Due to the growth in Jakarta's population it is struggling to build and provide enough infrastructure to support everyone. Many people do not have enough food since they cannot find jobs to earn money because there is not enough employment for everyone. Jakarta's population density is approximately 15 342 people per square kilometer. The recent estimation of Jakarta's population was made on 1st January 2015, stating that
12 749 000 people lived in Jakarta. This has been an increase of 2.5 million since the last estimation was made in 2013. There was a dramatic decrease in population between 1955-2000, this was due to the high level of urbanisation going on in that period of time.
